The urinal with a sliding handrail combines both a handrail and a backrest, allowing seniors with mobility problems, disabled individuals, and those recovering their health to have a hands-free experience in the bathroom. The simple structure of the sliding handrail makes it convenient and practical, as it can easily be put back into place within the urinal, adding an artistic and functional touch to the design.
Step 1: In a normal use, both sides of the urinal can serve as handrails.
Step 2: By sliding the left handrail, it can be used as a backrest, providing additional support and comfort.
Step 3: After use, the backrest can be slid back into a fixed position, ready for the next user.
The project, initiated in March 2017 in Shenyang, China, was completed by the Industrial Design College of LAFA in February 2018. The design team, consisting of Cao Weizhi, Chen Qi, Li Xuesong, Zhang Xudong, Zhang Qin, Li Junxi, Yan Yueming, Zhang Anzhen, Qi Hongrui, and Xing Chang, aimed to address the inconveniences and potential safety hazards faced by special groups when using urinals.
This innovative design has been recognized for its excellence, receiving the Iron A' Design Award in the Bathroom Furniture and Sanitary Ware Design category in 2018. This award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The backrest of the urinal not only fulfills these criteria but also contributes to a better world by providing a safe and accessible solution for individuals with mobility issues.
